National Championship Opening Round Host Site

  • The NAIA Softball National Championship begins with a field of 40 teams/ 40 teams will play in ten opening round national championship tournaments at designated sites. Winners of the ten national championship opening round tournaments advance to the ten-team National Championship.

    The dates for the 2019 national championship opening rounds are May 13-15.

    The following questionnaire and official bid solicits information from NAIA member institutions, Affiliated Conferences groups or Convention and Visitors Bureaus/Sports Commissions interested in hosting a NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round tournament. Please complete this form and submit by April 1.

  • MANDATORY CRITERIA FOR HOSTING A SOFTBALL OPENING ROUND

    Rights Fee:
    A rights fee of $6,000 is required upon your institution being chosen to host an Opening Round.

    Facility Availability:
    Availability of the facility for practice and competition is required Saturday through Wednesday (May 11-15). The facility must be exclusively available for the four team’s practices and competition.
    a. Institutions may use an off-campus facility providing that the facility is within 20 miles of the main campus and prior approval has been obtained from the NAIA.

    Facility/Site Considerations:
    a. Minimum seating capacity of 1,000
    b. A championship caliber field /facility equipped with lights and a tarp and/or turf field.
    c. An alternate/back-up championship field/facility within driving distance of the primary venue.
    d. A minimum of two practice fields located near the championship venue/facility and the host hotel(s).
    e. Parking lot available
    f. The facility must have an operating electronic scoreboard
    g. The facility must have a designated press area (press box or press row)
    h. Certification of the facility by the NAIA national office.

    In-Venue Services Required:
    a. The institution must provide a Certified Athletic Trainer on-site at all practices and competition.
    b. The institution must provide a Sports Information Director that will provide live statistics on Dakstats throughout the Opening Round game.
    c. The institution must produce a live video stream production during the Opening Round game.

    Hotel Requirements:
    a. Host hotel must be a quality hotel within 15 miles of the host facility (within 30 miles can be submitted for approval from the NAIA)
    b. Host hotel must meet the Expedia “star” rating of 3.8 stars or higher for customer satisfaction (can be found by searching your hotel at https://www.expedia.com/Hotels)
    c. Host hotels must allow for a team rate of $30 per star rating points maximum (example: Hotel X is a 4.0 star rating according to Expedia, therefore the rate for staff, officials, and teams must be $120 or less)
    **Recommendations: Host hotel with conference room and availability for a 48 room block for staff, officials, and teams with breakfast included.

    Opening Round Celebration Requirements:
    The host will organize a student-athlete experience celebration for participating student-athletes from both teams and officials. The official party from each participating institution is required to attend. Twenty-three tickets are provided to each institution, as well as complimentary tickets for officials and the NAIA site supervisor. Student-athlete experience celebrations should consist of a minimum of a full-meal the evening before competition, a presentation of Champions of Character awards, and a memorable experience for the athletes. In addition, we would like to suggest three options to create a memorable championship experience for the student-athletes in attendance, but please feel free to be creative with the personalization of your championship student-athlete experience event.

    Suggested student-athlete experience events (all events must include a full meal):
    1. Dinner banquet w/ entertainment (ex. keynote speaker, performance artist, programming, ect.)
    2. Interactive Event (ex. DJ, AV elements, games, social interaction activities, ect.)
    3. Destination Event (local attractions, museums, Hall of Fame, outdoor venues, community involvement, ect.)

  • Institutions, conferences/groups or CVB's that bid at least $6,000 to host an Opening Round tournament and meet all other requirements can designate a local "host" team; provided that institution/team is a national qualifier and the bid is accepted. If an accepted bid is from an institution whose team does NOT qualify as automatic or at-large qualifier, then that team will receive a "host" (at-large) berth into the field of 40.

    Top seeds/teams that submit a bid will not be guaranteed to host an Opening Round tournament. Bids will be selected based upon the overall quality of the bids and geographic locations. Bids submitted by affiliated conferences can list more than one potential "host" team; however, they must guarantee that each potential host can adhere to all hosting requirements (facilities, housing guidelines, etc.). Host sites are expected to uphold the terms and conditions outlined in the Opeing Round Host Manual and Questionnaire.

  • RECOMMENDED SITE SUPERVISOR: The NAIA reserves the right to appoint their own site supervisor, but we would like a designated site supervisor recommendation from the host institution that shall not be affiliated in any way with the schools participating in the Opening Round tournament.

  • ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF MANDATORY OPENING ROUND POLICIES

  • The official name of the event shall be the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round and must be conducted under the direct control and supervision of the NAIA and the NAIA’s designated site supervisor. The host site coordinator will work with the NAIA National Office sport manager in organizing and conducting the championship. Failure to meet the criteria specified in the host manual and survey/bid forms will impact an institution’s future hosting opportunities in this and other sports.
